Welcome to Exploring Now

web page

What I am exploring now page deals with sites I have an interest in which are still questionable
.

Stony Creek Crossing

This site is located north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike just west of the Allegheny Mtn. Tunnel's west portal and much closer west of Kimmel's Ridge. It is the area where the South Pennsylvania Railroad had established it's 4th
division site which was called the Somerset Division. Here at this site it was established that the west end of a bridge was to be the division line. Well one morning I woke up with this site on my mind. I have been to this site on many occassions but on one trip I was in touch with a local who stated that the farmer changed the creek known as Stony Creek. Of course I was not happy with this as what is a farmer building such a set of bridge piers for a back road. Most farmers would ford such a creek. Also why would a farmer change a creek into an open field when it originally was against a hillside.

Above left: The letter describing that this bridge (right) would be inside division four but right against the fifth division. Also the channel which Sue looks at is the new channel, the old channel is to her back by about fifty yards.

In search of another quarry (Burnt Cabins)

Recently I reviewed a book of the history of Burnt Cabins and found a culvert I already explored. The thing that caught my eye was that the caption stated that the stones for this culvert were quarried from a place south east of the Burnt Cabins Cemetery. In the shot were standing two men. I contacted one and he agreed to escort me to the site. I will let you know what I find in the fall. Stay informed come back for ths one.

Mountain Craft Days

Every year I travel sixty miles to the east up the Pennsylvania Turnpike to a great place north of Somerset to Mountain Craft Days. This year the event will be Fri/09/11-Sun/09/13. This year I will be focusing on the 1938-1939 aerial photos against the South Pennsylvania Rairload Survey Maps. You will be able to compare the remaing work on the aerial photos against the survey maps. I enjoy this event and even the day after the previous showing I look forward to the next year.

See you at Mountain Craft Days. Somerset, Pennsylvania.
